New Initiatives in Educational Research, Management, and the Arts

Bookmaking and Art

The Bookmaking Studio creates three kinds of books: books by children, made in classes or special projects, used thereafter in class or the library; books written and illustrated by NIRMAN team members and collaborators, intended for commercial publication; and books illustrated or created by artisans, written or designed by NIRMAN team members, also intended for commercial publication. The aim is to be a driving force behind a rennaisance in children’s book writing and production in India. We have recently received a small grant from Sir Ratan Tata Trust for the year 2009-10 to produce and publish eight books: be on the look out for these books by March 2010!

The Art Studio conducts workshops and classes, and organises artist residences and courses. It coordinates two networks: the Artists’ Network and the Artisans’ Network. As in the Musicians’ Network, these are ways to bring together professionals who want to contribute to the development of their art forms and have new avenues to display their work. They provide guidance, teach, and collaborate in projects.

We are now planning to create a small exhibition space in our city campus.
