Vidyashram - The Southpoint is a school for boys and girls, of all classes, communities, and abilities, with new methods in bilingualism (English and Hindi), the sciences, and the arts. We are located on a beautiful green campus in Varanasi (also known as Kashi, Benaras, or Banaras), in the state of Utter Pradesh, India. This year, we have expanded to our new campus. Our philosophy has been guided from the very beginning by the creative, learned, humourous, and amazingly child-centred vision of Dr. Som Majumdar, Director of the school, 1990-2003. What makes Vidyashram different? Our children love to learn: Parents are amazed at how we all look forward to school. Our children are creative: We put up annual ‘Fairs’ with our own exhibits, plays, dances, and compositions, as well as costumes and scenery. Our campus is green: We all learn to take care of it and want to make others care for their environment also. Our library is wonderful: It has an ever-growing collection of books for all ages—and is friendly and quiet. We write our own books too. |

We have exciting curricula that we have developed ourselves. It actively makes connections between Indian arts and modern sciences by combining them in every step of the teaching. Our laboratories are good, and supplemented by continuous hands-on work. Most of all, Vidyashram integrates children of all backgrounds and abilities. It is a school for all children without discrimination, subsidizing costs for those who need it. It specially believes in integrating minorities and artisan communities. It trains teachers, staff, and public to co-operate in this unique philosophy of non-discrimination. Vidyashram seeks to be a revolution in Indian education. It is a model of how the most fundamental problems in Indian education may be solved.
A class ten student talks to a teacher during class. At Vidyashram, class is often held outside. |
